In The News: Sperry, Grassroots Outdoor Alliance, Cybersecurity Act, TrusTrace, K-Swiss, Shoe Carnival, Reebok

Sperry has introduced Sperry Sport, a new collection of footwear the brand says is “engineered for performance and designed for outdoors enthusiasts.” Designed for a wide range of activities on the water and the shoreline, the collection, launching this month, features six styles ranging in price from $54.99 - $119.99. Performance details in the footwear include enhanced traction, non-marking rubber, hydrophobic materials, and anti-vibration, cushioned midsoles.


Grassroots Outdoor Alliance, the specialty outdoor retail trade organization, is seeking a new president to replace departing president Rich Hill, who plans to step away from his role later this spring after leading the group’s annual strategic planning session and assisting in the search process for his replacement. A hiring process is in place for the position of president at GOA with a target start date of June 1, 2022. The Strengthening American Cybersecurity Act is headed to Pres. Biden’s desk for signing following passage by both the House and Senate last week. The National Retail Federation says the pending legislation will help protect resources ranging from the U.S. electrical grid to the availability of essential consumer products. Provisions of the bill will require that owners and operators of critical infrastructure report to a federal cybersecurity agency within 72 hours if they are experiencing a substantial cyberattack and within 24 hours if they make a ransomware payment.


TrusTrace Certified Material Compliance, a one-stop solution for enabling near real-time traceability at the material level, has been introduced by Stockholm, Sweden and India-based TrusTrace. The solution is expected to help customers bolster their confidence in compliance and their respective journeys to more sustainable portfolios. TCMC will map the movement of raw materials to finished goods to automatically calculate sustainability metrics. Finished merchandise will traceability information associated with them, enabling brands to tell the story of the products’ origins and material integrity more easily to consumers, retailers, and regulators. Adidas and Amsterdam-based Fashion for Good are among the first to adopt the TCMC solution.


Sport Chek, a retail chain owned by Canadian Tire, will carry the Reebok brand online and in 300 of its stores starting this fall.


K-Swiss added to its senior management team. Anna Amador, formerly with Skechers, Nike and Adidas, is the new VP of marketing. Kristina Barclay, most recently e-commerce operations director for PAIGE, is the new director of e-commerce for the Los Angeles company where she will manage the K-Swiss and Palladium brand sites.


Shoe Carnival now intends to have its entire fleet of stores revitalized by the end of FY24. Approximately 50 percent of the remodels will be done this fiscal year after 20 percent were completed in 2021. In 2021, SCVL net revenues rose 36 percent to $1.33 billion as comparable store sales increased 35.3 percent versus a 5.3 percent decline in FY20.
