Schuylkill Valley Closing All But One Store, Maintaining Team and Online Business As It Restructures

Citing “unprecedented times” but reaffirming its “endless appreciation and gratitude for … our loyal community of customers,” Schuylkill Valley Sports CEO and president Jason Lutz announced in a letter on its website this week that the retailer and team dealer based in Pottstown, PA, will be closing nine of its 10 stores. It will, however, continue to operate its team business and its online unit.

But, Lutz, who revealed that the one store that will remain open is in Quakertown, PA, promised that the retailer is not going out of business and will be opening new stores with a new retail concept.

Set to close are two stores in Pottstown and one each in Easton, Lebanon, Newtown, Pottsville, Reading, Selinsgrove and Wilkes Barre (all in Pennsylvania).

“All merchandise and fixtures must go,” reads a post on the website of liquidations Eaton Hudson.

In his message on the company’s website (https://www.svsports.com/info/message-from-ceo), Lutz explained that “Over the course of the last few weeks, we have made the difficult decision to close several of these locations. If you happen to see a store closing in your community, we are letting you know that this is NOT a good-bye.

“As the face of retail continues to change, we felt the need to update our overall customer experience,” he continued. “In some situations, it means moving to a location that will be more convenient for our customers and in other situations it means that the existing location will remain in operation, with a fresh new look coming soon … We feel that we have developed a game-changing store where the athlete is prioritized and all of a team’s needs are met. We are busy working out the details and can’t wait to welcome you back!”

Lutz then urged customers to continue to shop at their local store in the coming weeks “to get a few great deals,” while emphasizing that it will be business as usual online at svsports.com.

And, most importantly to the team business, he stressed that, “While our physical locations may be leaving your community, our Team Sales division will continue to be your local supplier of apparel, equipment and footwear. SVSGsports is currently evolving and enhancing our Team Sales division to provide our leagues, teams, and businesses a championship experience for all coaches, athletes, and fans today!”
