Physical Health is Motivation of New-Pandemic Runners

A new study by RunRepeat, the athletic shoe review site, finds running motivation, race participation and racing preferences differ between pre-pandemic and new-pandemic runners. The survey of 3,961 U.S. runners shows that nearly 29 percent took up running during the COVID-19 pandemic and that 72 percent of them see the activity as important for physical health.

Other reasons for taking up the activity, according to the new-pandemic group included: for competition and achievement (22.8%), for mental and emotional health (54.5%), for confidence and self-esteem (31.5%) and for social interaction (11.5%).

The findings suggest run specialty shops may need to engage differently with this new segment of the running community. For example, the RunRepeat report also found that only half of new-pandemic runners intend to participate over the next 12 months.
