Payless is Back Again

Share:

Fourteen months after closing its remaining U.S. stores and after filing its second Chap. 11 bankruptcy in Jan. 2020, value shoe retailer Payless is returning to the U.S. market with an e-commerce presence that will be followed by a brick-and-mortar prototype in Miami this fall. Under CEO Jay Margolis, the retailer, founded in 1956, intends to open more than 300 retail locations in the U.S. over the next three to five years.

Having dropped “ShoeSource” from it official name as it adds accessories and apparel to its merchandise mix, Payless is offering free delivery on all orders over $65. Initial merchandise mix includes seven brands for men, including LA Gear and Airwalk, with prices ranging up to $65 for a LA Gear men’s high top. Women’s prices on the e-commerce site range from  $18 to $35 on brands including American Eagle, Kendall + Kylie and Aerosoles. Disney and Marvel-licensed offerings are included in the $10 to $27 range for boys and girls.

Payless continues to operate 700 international stores, including 298 franchises that were not impacted by the bankruptcies. The retailer will reportedly unveil a number of new in-store features in the Miami prototype, including smart mirrors and touchscreen wall panels.
