NB Signs MLB Superstar Ohtani

Yesterday, New Balance announced it has added Shohei Ohtani to its roster of athletes. The Japanese superstar is a pitcher and designated hitter for the Los Angeles Angels. He previously was an ASICS athlete. Financial specifics of the long-term deal with NB were not revealed.

Ohtani is one of the few two-way players to ever play the game, and the only player to ever be named All-MLB First Team as a pitcher and a hitter. He was both the starting pitcher and leadoff hitter in the 2021 MLB All-Star game. Ohtani played his first years as a professional in Japan before joining the Angels in 2018 and earning the American League Rookie of the Year Award. Now entering his sixth year in the league, Ohtani is in the final year of his contract with the Angels. The baseball world is already buzzing with anticipation to see which team he will play for after this season.

NB says it will work with Ohtani on a variety of campaigns, beginning with a limited-edition 574 Cleat, a new take on one of the brand’s classic models. This will be the first time the iconic 574 model will appear on the field. The 574 Cleat matches up in pattern and aesthetic to the 574, but the cleat version includes changes to the interior to ensure the cleat has the fit, support and performance elements needed for on-field play. The 574 Cleat will launch this month with the suggested retail price starting at $120.
