In The News: Academy Sports + Outdoors, AmerSports, Dick’s Sporting Goods

Dick’s Sporting Goods is expanding its reach with six new stores (Lynchburg, VA; Happy Valley, OR; Annapolis, MD; Wilmington, NC; Modesto, CA and Houston, TX), two combination Dick’s/Golf Galaxy locations and three warehouse sales doors (Monroeville, PA; Olathe, KS and Royal Palm Beach, FL) this month. Additionally, DKS is opening its first in-store soccer experience specialty shop at its Leawood, KS store on Oct. 23 before expanding the concept to a limited number of other stores in November.


Academy Sports + Outdoors came in valued at $1.1 billion as its IPO went off on Oct. 2 with a $12.10 opening price. The Katy, TX retailer, which raised $203 million in the offering, had aimed to sell shares between $15 and $17 for a valuation of approximately $1.7 billion. After the IPO, Academy remains 75-percent controlled by insiders. Private-equity firm KKR acquired the now 259-door chain in 2011.


Amer Sports, a year after being acquired by a consortium led by China’s ANTA Sports Products Ltd.,has named Jie Zheng as executive director and Michael Hauge Sorenson as chief operating officer. Former CEO Heikki Takala moves to special board advisor. Sorenson, who has more than 25 years in the global apparel and footwear industry, has been an Amer board advisor since early 2019.
