Regional sporting goods chain Academy Sports + Outdoors, which counts 41 percent, or 106, of its 259 current stores in the Lone Star State, wants to expand its reach by opening 80 to 100 new locations over the next five years. The expansion plan, which includes eight doors in 2022 and likely another 20 in 2023, will take Academy beyond its current 16-state footprint that is largely in the U.S. Southwest.

Elsewhere, Academy realized 23.6 percent sales growth in its footwear business last fiscal year to $1.29 billion. The $245.7 million increase included 14 percent category growth in the fourth quarter. The chain’s e-commerce sales accounted for 9.3 percent of all 2021 revenues, or an implied $629.9 million, versus 10.4 percent of total 2020 revenues. Half of the banner’s e-commerce orders are “Buy Online, Pick-up in Store” with door’s fulfilling 75 percent of all such orders.

Advertising costs rose 23.2 percent for Academy Sports +Outdoors last year to $151.2 million versus $122.8 million in 2020, according to the retailer’s latest 10-K filing.
