Much of the cushioning innovation to be found in road shoes is also on full display in new trail offerings, whether for ultra-distances or everyday use. Brooks Caldera 7

This shoe is for trail runners who want ultimate comfort and stability for long distances. It has super-soft DNA LOFT v3 cushioning and an upper that offers a secure, adaptable fit. MSRP $150.

Topo Athletic Pursuit 2

This zero-drop trail style from Topo has generously spaced lugs and a Vibram Megagrip outsole, as well a tightly woven recycled mesh upper and a ZipFoam midsole for a soft ride. MSRP $145.

Part of Lowa’s All-Terrain Running (ATR) line, Fortus GTX is built for distance trail running, ultra-marathons and speed hiking when ankle support and waterproof protection are needed. MSRP $190.

A winter running shoe from the performance brand from Finland, the Ace is engineered for comfort and performance in icy conditions, with a waterproof upper and star-studs for traction. $180.
