Snipes, the Cologne, Germany-based streetwear chain, controlled by family-owned Deichmann SE, is continuing to build out its U.S. store base. Last week, Snipes agreed to buy New England-based sneaker retailer Expressions for an undisclosed sum. With 35 Expressions  doors spread across Connecticut, Massachusetts and Rhode Island, the acquisition bring Snipes’ U.S. door count to 300, or about 44 percent of its global total of 680 storefronts. The acquisition comes some eight weeks after Snipes acquired the Jimmy Jazz chain and its 170 locations. Earlier, in 2019, Snipes purchased KicksUSA and Mr. Alan’s.

“Expressions is not just adjacent to our current footprint but shares our commitment to serve sneaker and streetwear enthusiasts in their communities,” said Sven Voth, CEO, and founder of Snipes in a statement. “This acquisition further underlines both the importance of the U.S. market to Snipes and the potential for growth we see there.”

Early last month, Snipes launched poq-powered iOS and Android mobile shopping apps to supports digital growth in the U.S. market. The retailer intends to work with poq, a MACH-certified cloud-based native mobile app platform used by the likes of Hot Topic and Surfstitch, to optimize its app store marketing strategy and increase the discoverability of the new mobile apps. Besides access to exclusive marketing content, the apps will offer product bar code scanning and store finder functionality to encourage customers to visit physical stores. It remains unclear if Snipes has a strategy to eventually rebrand its various U.S. nameplates.

Snipes’ lists of talent and brand collaborations have allowed the retailer to establish local and global reach during its 24-year history. Past partnerships have included limited-edition capsule collection for PlayStation with 21 Savage, apparel collection with DJ Khaled and adidas Forum releases in conjunction with the NBA’s Detroit Pistons.
