Motiva Shoe from Nike Targets Walkers, Joggers

Nike’s new Motiva shoe features rocker geometry and is made for walking, jogging and running. Specifically, the brand says, it is made for varied activities and fluctuating paces. Nike’s R&D process leveraged insights from women logging workouts on the Nike Run Club app and interviews with more than 1,000 people who walk, jog and run. The insights led the team on a path to create a shoe with a goal of making “movement more enjoyable.”

The Nike team noticed that the majority of women logging their first workout on the Nike Run Club app were averaging a 13-minute mile. But they weren’t just running at that pace — they were fluctuating between walking, jogging, running, starting and stopping throughout their activity. The new Motiva shoe aims to address this group with its design elements — removing distractions and helping make the stride smoother.

At a slower pace, people are more likely to strike the ground heel first, which is where the shoe’s rocker geometry comes into play, helping roll the foot forward after heel impact, the brand says. The shoe also has more cushioning underfoot with a full-length Cushlon 3.0 foam. ComfortGroove bumps on the outsole help make the underfoot experience softer, compressing where and when it is needed. The Motiva also has a widened forefoot, arch and toe box for a roomy fit. The shoe will launch in May.
