Famous Footwear Accelerating Curbside Pick-up, Door Closure Plans

Famous Footwear parent Caleres says a curbside pick-up option will be available at approximately 500 Famous Footwear stores by June 30, up from 300 at the end of the first quarter. Meanwhile, after analyzing the performance of every store within its portfolio, Caleres will now shutter approximately 160 doors across its specialty retail and Famous Footwear stores in 2020 and 2021 and will consider shedding any brands in its portfolio that “aren’t performing in this environment.”

The current 17 footwear brands in Caleres’ portfolio include Allen Edmonds, Naturalizer, Zodiac, Vionic, Ryka and Franco Sarto. In the first quarter, Caleres decided to exit the Fergie label, several private brands and certain lower-margin businesses in its portfolio.

Last week, Caleres’ CFO Kenneth Hannah told analysts that first fall shipments from the company’s brand portfolio will likely be pushed back until the end of July due to retailers’ desire to extend the spring footwear season “as long as they can” to move inventory.

Same-store sales at Famous rose 12.6 percent in the first quarter, fueled by strength from e-commerce, which represented 28 percent of the topline versus approximately 10 percent last year. During May, e-commerce sales at Famous Footwear shot up more than 200 percent.
