Sixteen states have established sales tax holidays this summer with most offering their residents no taxes on school supplies, apparel, and footwear. Most of the tax holidays are in August, according to data from the Federation of Tax Administrators.

The state of Alabama will kick-off the season on July 21-23 with tax-free status on all clothing priced at $100 or less, school supplies at $50 retail or less and books costing $30 or less. Mississippi will follow with its tax-free holiday on July 28-29 with no taxes on clothing and footwear priced at $100 or less followed by Tennessee (July 28-30).

Most states have set the Aug. 4-6 period as their tax-free window, including Arkansas, Iowa, Missouri, New Mexico, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, and West Virginia. Other states with tax-free holidays late in the month include Connecticut, Texas and Massachusetts.
