Details such as waistbands or bra straps that stay put and don’t chafe; fabrics that feel good and adapt to weather conditions; versatility in style for all-day wearability; inclusive sizing and design; and of course, pockets, pockets, pockets (!) And that’s just a start. Here, brands share insight on how they incorporate feedback from women runners into their products for women, and we highlight some top product picks for 2025.
Q: What is some common feedback you get from women runners about what they’re looking for in footwear, apparel, gear? How do you incorporate this into your design process?”
“One of the most consistent pieces of feedback we receive is the importance of inclusive sizing—making every runner feel confident and seen. Women, in particular, want products that fit well across a range of body shapes and sizes, so we offer extended sizing and design each piece to perform beautifully, regardless of where someone falls on the size spectrum. Pockets that actually work for running essentials—like gels or phones—are another must. We are constantly gathering insights and wear-testing feedback from our community and athletes to refine our designs.”- Monica Devreese, co-founder, rabbit
“We are always asked for comfort/function/versatility and get constant feedback about wanting pockets on everything. A great example of how we incorporated that would be the Luxe bra and Luxe tight. They were designed with comfort and function in mind; the Luxe bra features a phone pocket at the center back and the Luxe tight has the side drop in pockets with a drawcord to function on and off the run. It’s also a buttery soft fabric to give it that multi-use feel. We wanted women to feel comfortable while they are on the run but still look cute if they want to stop and grab a coffee with friends after.
We conduct a high volume of wear testing when choosing new fabrics, so this means we will get multiple samples in different options to make sure that it’s comfortable, but also has those performance qualities like wicking and antimicrobial.” - Jasmine Leidich, apparel designer, Brooks
“With the rise of running socials and the growing focus on mental and physical health, fitness and everyday life are blending more than ever. Traditional running accessories are becoming everyday essentials worn beyond the run. Consumers want to be able to keep fashion forward even when hitting the trail or running a marathon. It has been important to us to continue to keep up with and offer the season’s trending colors and styles to essentially become the daily accessory they can’t live without.” - Kim Overton, founder, SPIbelt
“Most women runners and their go-to run shops appreciate the value of designed by women for women. Amphipod products geared to women are engineered with full built-in adjustability for a comfortable custom fit that is flexible for a woman’s unique body features, and range of sizes and shapes, while providing quick-access to key essentials like fluid and nutrition.” - June Angus, co-founder, Amphipod Running Gear
“Women today are driven by a deeper understanding of what they wear. It’s no longer just about style, but about performance, technology, and comfort. They seek apparel that will elevate their performance and when you merge this into women specific/flattering silhouette, it resonates. We often hear from customers at our flagship store - espace | MTL - how much they appreciate that they’re not just wearing the ‘women’s version’ of a men’s style, but something designed for them. I think the RDCRPSinglet is a great example, featuring HOLLOWMesh fabric, which is part of our COOLmatic | EXP fabrics. Carbon is embedded into the fabric, helping to regulate your body temperature while providing permanent anti-odor properties. The silhouette itself is designed specifically for women; featherlight, flowy, and stitch-free to prevent any chafing.”- Catherine Langelier, apparel designer, Ciele Athletics
“One of the most common pieces of feedback we hear from women runners is that they avoid sunscreen because they don’t like how it feels on their skin. That’s why a core formulation pillar is creating products that feel fantastic—what we call an ‘elegant’ feel in formulation terms. This focus is fundamental to every KINeSYS product. If it doesn’t feel amazing on the skin, it doesn’t make the cut.” - Lisa Heggie, owner, KINeSYS
“Women runners tell us they want apparel that empowers them to feel confident and perform their best, regardless of the distance or challenge. At CEP, we integrate these insights into every detail—from compression levels to garment structure—creating solutions that meet the high expectations of today’s runners. Our goal is to support women, stride by stride, with apparel that feels like an extension of their own strength.”- Elyse Wunschel, national specialty sales manager, CEP
“The primary feedback Nathan Sports receives from female runners is that it’s hard to find hydration vests that fit their bodies well. Female runners generally have smaller frames. Women also tend to have shorter torsos and narrower shoulders, so Nathan designs women’s vests with a contoured fit and micro-size adjustment systems for comfort. Our women’s vests are shorter than unisex vests, slightly wider in the chest, and narrower at the bottom hem.
For 2025, the new Pinnacle Pro vest allows female runners to customize their vest fit by adjusting, moving, and cutting the front sternum cords. The Quick Fit size system on the lower front hem or side of the vest allows for micro-size adjustments while on the run, ensuring maximum comfort and stability.”- Jennifer Rust, senior product line manager, Nathan Sports
“Feedback is an essential part of our product development process. The most common piece of feedback we get from female runners is how important distraction free running is to them, simply meaning the expectations they have of their gear to perform and how they prioritize comfortable products that give them confidence in their runs.” - Kelly Fatouretchi, sr. director of merchandising, ASICS America
