A look at footwear and apparel offerings catching our attention right now with their combo of peak performance and innovative design.

Roark: The new Roark Run Amok X Black Sabbath trail running capsule collection is a partnership between the always adventurous brand Roark and iconic heavy metal band Black Sabbath. Available online and at specialty retail,  the collection includes a range of premium running apparel, including lined and linerless shorts, quick drying tops, and a lightweight bomber style run jacket. The designs and prints incorporate Black Sabbath’s iconic imagery with a nod to a wild night in 1972 that the band spent in Roark’s hometown of Laguna Beach. Guitarist Tony Iommi laid down on the warm sand to watch the sky turn pink with the light of the morning sun, inspiring Black Sabbath’s lush opus “Laguna Sunrise.”

Vuori: A brand whose fashionable, active styles draw high praise from running retailers, Vuori’s apparel pieces are ready for anything. The Ease Performance 1/2 Zip, $84, is versatile enough to be thrown over or under workout or daily attire. Built with UPF 30+ and a zip stash pocket, this pullover is made to be in motion, with quick-drying and moisture-wicking properties. Other features include anti-odor, flatlock seams and a reflective logo.

Jogology: Say hello to new sock brand Jogology. Founded by running industry veterans Tanya and Bert Pictor and Luke Rowe, the brand is laser focused on runners and running retail. Jogology socks are designed to mirror how running shoes are made, locking in the heel and midfoot to minimize in-shoe movement and leaving toes free to flex. Each sock offers a second-skin fit with arch support massage bands to eliminate excess fabric and create a moisture management layer between the foot and the shoe. Made from sustainable, recycled, moisture-management re-dri yarn with a super soft hand and extra durability, Jogology socks, retailing for $16, are available in three different cushion levels (low, medium and high).

Diadora: The new Equipe Sestriere XT, $170, the brand’s first trail run shoe, is designed to perform on all natural terrains, from grass to rocks. Its  aggressive design is inspired by the animal world — the sole’s XT technology replicates the structure of an ibex's hoof, allowing for lightness and agility. Plus, the lateral portion of the sole has a hard rubber for stability and grip on grass and mud, while the central part features a soft, high-grip rubber for running on wet rocks. The protective upper features the addition of a polyurethane application that extends from the toebox to the rear of the shoe for enhanced structure.

Paradis Sport: A new performance underwear brand, Paradis Sport just launched a natural fiber underwear line. (It joins the brand’s seamless underwear line, which has gained popularity with runners as an undergarment option that does not chafe). The Connecticut-based brand, whose garments are made by women for women, and made sustainably in the USA, currently has distribution in select running and outdoor specialty shops, and will be attending The Running Event trade show in Austin this November.  The brand’s new natural fiber underwear is built to perform and is made with BPA-free micro-modal fabric. It also offers Paradis Sport’s “wedgie-free promise.”

Vimazi: This running shoe brand with a unique “pace-tuned” approach to design introduced itself last year and is expanding its offerings this Fall with trail shoes such as the $170 Trail Z3, shown here. Each of the brand’s different road and trail a is engineered to perform best within a certain pace zone. The Trail Z3, for example, is designed and tuned for trail runners moving at a 10:00-16:00 minute per mile pace. (Its road shoe, the Z20, on the other hand, is tuned for an elite marathon pace of 4:30-5:30 minutes per mile.) Vimazi’s patent-pending tech aims to deliver optimized cushioning and propulsion efficiency for every runner, on every run. The Vimazi Trail Z3 has an aggressive tread, external rear stabilizer, toe protection, and built-in forefoot control during push-off.

Adidas Terrex: Coming to retail in Spring 2024, the Agravic Speed Ultra is a trail shoe with dynamic rocker geometry designed for forefoot running. The $200+ shoe was designed for and alongside the sport’s leading athletes, with an early prototype premiering on elite runners in Chamonix. It is built to provide runners with ultimate speed across ultra-distance races. It has a LIGHTSTRIKE PRO midsole for cushioning, plus energy return for next-level speed. Integrated Energy Rods provide lightweight stiffness for a dynamic stride designed for ultra-distances. A gusseted tongue provides mid-foot support and seamless over-lays provide abrasion resistance and protection. A Continental Rubber outsole offers traction in wet and dry conditions.
