ELEVATING ESSENTIAL PERFORMERS
For those on their feet all day at work, the right footwear is beyond critical.
Genuine Grip / Women #150: Featuring slip-resistant rubber outsoles for superior traction, these oil-resistant and water-resistant shoes offer ultra-lightweight construction for all-day wear. Shock-absorbing composite foam and a cushioned midsole combine with a removable polyurethane cushion insole. An Aegis Microbe Shield helps control odor, staining, and deterioration. MSRP $75.49.

For nurses and restaurant workers, who spend most of their workdays on their feet, having reliable footwear is beyond  critical. “It can make or break a long shift,” says Matthew Tracy, president of Sanita USA.

“People in these jobs are on their feet all day, moving fast, and dealing with unpredictable environments” notes Sam Sproull, brand marketing manager, Warson Brands.

“Healthcare professionals and restaurant workers share the same core features: fast-paced environments, long hours, and constant exposure to spills,” says Jordyn Amoroso, co-founder and chief brand officer, CLOVE. “They need footwear that delivers real fatigue reduction, dependable slip resistance, and materials that can be cleaned quickly and easily.”

Nurses often want something lightweight and cushioned that still feels supportive after a 12-hour shift, notes Sproull, who adds that “restaurant workers, who are also constantly on the move, need dependable slip resistance and stability on slick floors. A broken-in feel right out of the box is ideal.”

Wayne Lee, president, Genuine Grip Footwear, notes that, “Today’s restaurant workers and healthcare professionals are on their feet for extended shifts, so lightweight construction and all-day comfort are no longer optional, they are essential.”

Must-Have Traits

“Our Professional clogs are designed specifically for long wear time because they help keep your body in proper alignment as you stand and walk,” says Sanita’s Tracy. “Workers in this industry also need shoes that are easy to clean and maintain to adapt to a rigorous work environment.”

At Warson, designs for its stable of brands focus on lightweight constructions that don’t feel bulky or fatiguing over time; and cushioned midsoles and footbeds that provide all-day comfort without sacrificing support. Flexibility, grip and soft, breathable uppers are also focuses. “Overall, it’s about removing friction, physically and mentally, so the shoe just works, feels good all day, and doesn’t slow them down,” Sproull says.

Genuine Grip focuses on reducing fatigue through ergonomic cushioning while ensuring safety with certified slip-resistant outsoles, says Lee. The brand’s styles are ASTM F3345-24 SRO rated and incorporate anti-microbial materials to support hygiene in demanding environments.

At Alegria, in addition to details such as slip-resistance and support, the design team focuses on combining ergonomic footbeds, rocker geometry, and supportive uppers that feel secure without being restrictive, using soft materials that comfortably adapt to the foot. Says Emily Hagen, designer, Alegria, “Lightweight construction is equally important, as reducing overall shoe weight can make a meaningful difference over the course of a long shift.”

Trending Up

Athletic silhouettes continue to influence designs for nurses and kitchen staff. Technology and safety details are a must, but designs going from lightweight to “even more lightweight” and being versatile enough to wear all-day is a key focus.

“Design trends are shifting toward athletic silhouettes that pair wider, stable platforms with ultra-lightweight construction,” says Genuine Grip Footwear’s Lee. “There is also growing interest in cruelty-free materials, reflecting both performance needs and evolving consumer values.”

Customers today want occupational footwear that feels modern and versatile rather than purely utilitarian, says Alegria’s Hagen. “The line between everyday casual footwear and work footwear continues to blur, with consumers looking for styles that deliver function while still feeling current and expressive.”

Amoroso notes that CLOVE is seeing “a clear shift toward footwear that blends performance with personal style. Today’s healthcare professionals don’t want to choose between function and aesthetics — they expect both. While trends like maximalist cushioning and vintage-inspired silhouettes are influencing the space, we focus on how those ideas translate to all-day wear. Our approach is to take that visual language and re-engineer it for the realities of the shift, so the product performs as well as it looks.”

“We’re seeing a shift away from traditional ‘work shoe’ looks into more everyday, lifestyle-inspired designs,” affirms Warson’s Sproull. “People don’t want to feel like they’re wearing clunky, overly technical footwear, or a generic shoe, they want something that feels more personal. Streetwear is trending, with low-profile builds and details that feel more like something you’d wear off the clock. Workers are looking for more relaxed, casual styling while still emphasizing lighter-weight constructions and more flexible materials. Basically, work shoes that don’t look like work shoes.”
