A SOPHISTICATED SHIFT
Office-friendly footwear continues to trend towards more polished looks.
ADYRO / Primo: Blending performance footwear comfort technology with a refined and elegant design, ADYRO’s Primo men’s sneaker boasts the brand’s FullForm ergonomic outsole and patent-pending Y-Lock-Fit lacing system. The sneakers are superlight, flexible and feature a woven textile upper. MSRP $79.95.

Comfort remains king, but office-friendly footwear continues to trend more towards polished designs over casual ones. “I think most people grew accustomed to the cushy feel of sneakers, but now they want to marry that comfort with something that looks sleeker and more professional,” says Sydney Simas, VP, Simco Imported Shoes.

“Today’s consumer expects versatility and comfort without sacrificing polish,” says Jill Butler, director of merchandising,  ECCO Americas. “Hybrid work has changed how people dress for the office, so they’re looking for footwear that can transition seamlessly from professional settings to everyday wear.”

Mike Walker, VP marketing at Taos, says the brand is seeing “a continued shift toward polished, low-profile silhouettes that balance professionalism with all-day wearability.” Styles such as modern Mary Janes, refined flats and loafers, and elevated sneakers are leading the way (along with some sandals that make the cut in certain workplaces).

“There’s also a growing preference for soft structure over rigidity, with clean lines, premium materials, and a more natural fit taking priority over traditional, formal footwear,” adds Walker.

Leander Dissinger, co-founder of Adyro, a new brand pairing comfort with elevated style, notes, “We’re seeing a clear shift toward more refined and elevated silhouettes in professional settings.” He adds, “At the same time, the widespread adoption of sneakers and athletic footwear over the past decade has reshaped expectations: comfort is no longer optional. Today’s consumer wants both. That’s where we position ourselves: creating footwear that seamlessly blends performance-level comfort with timeless, Italian-inspired design, delivering a polished look without compromising on wearability.”

Must-Have Traits

Above all, the “feel good factor” is what consumers want, even in their office footwear.

“Comfort is paramount. While professionals still want to present a polished, office-appropriate appearance, they are no longer willing to sacrifice all-day comfort to achieve it,” says Dissinger.

“The expectation today is that dress footwear should look refined but feel as comfortable and versatile as everyday shoes,” adds Butler.

“And styles that can transition from the office to running errands to nights out are especially important for the savvy consumer,” Simas notes.

In essence, the “office style” consumer expects their footwear to support their lifestyle, not slow it down or dictate it. “The top priorities are all-day comfort, proper arch support, and a natural anatomical fit that contributes to their overall wellness, especially as people spend more time on their feet or commuting back to the office,” notes Walker. “We’re also seeing increased demand for versatility and value - shoes that can transition easily from work to everyday life. Materials matter as well, with customers gravitating toward premium, breathable, and responsibly crafted options that feel as good as they look.”

Kelsey Jayne, VP of design, Dansko, sums it up: “It’s less about ‘comfort vs. style’ now. Comfort is the baseline. Shoes need to perform all day without sacrificing aesthetic.”
